The Christmas Train (Book Review)

The Christmas Train By David Baldacci – A Time Travel Book Review

Initially published in 2002, The Christmas Train is a timeless classic. It is a book I’ve read many times over the years. It is always fun when an author steps out of the traditional writing style. David Baldacci, as a writer of thrillers, is no exception. In The Christmas Train, Baldacci weaves a delightful tale around a group of people traveling across the country.

The story sparks many memories. The town where I grew up was a switching stop for the railroad. Train cars were repaired, and the dining and sleeping cars were restocked before the long trek over the Colorado Rocky Mountains. As a child, I was fascinated by the sight of travelers seated in the dining car. I used to weave stories about their lives and where they were going. It is probably why David Baldacci’s intriguing Christmas story became one of my favorites.

The Christmas Train is the type of book to read while curled up in a chair with my favorite winter’s night drink, hot chocolate. A Christmas tradition where I immerse myself in the small confines of a train and the antics of its passengers. What better way to spend a cold December night?

“A journalist on a cross-country Christmas train scales the rugged terrain of his own heart in this New York Times bestselling holiday tale that inspired the Hallmark Hall of Fame original movie!

Disillusioned journalist Tom Langdon must get from Washington to Los Angeles in time for Christmas. Forced to travel by train, he begins a journey of rude awakenings, thrilling adventures, and holiday magic. He has no idea that the locomotives pulling him across America will actually take him into the rugged terrain of his own heart, as he rediscovers people’s essential goodness and someone very special he believed he had lost.

David Baldacci’s THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN is filled with memorable characters who have packed their bags with as much wisdom as mischief…and shows how we do get second chances to fulfill our deepest hopes and dreams, especially during this season of miracles.”

About the author

David Baldacci has been writing since childhood when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she’d given him the notebook to keep him quiet, “because every mom needs a break now and then.”)

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. The feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 48 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.
